Family history

Herbert was born in Calverton in 1885 the son of James a butcher and Anne Turton née Watson of Calverton.

His father James was born in 1853 at Calverton, his mother Annie Watson was born in 1855 at Calverton, they were married on 25th October 1881 at Calverton, they went on to have 4 children.

In the 1911 census the family are living at Main Street, Calverton, Jams Turton 57 yrs is a butcher, he is living with his wife Annie 53 yrs and two of their children, Elenaor Kate 24 yrs a supplementary teacher and Amos Stafford 11 yrs a scholar.

Herbet married Mary Smith (born 21st November 1884 Bolsover ) they were married in 1906 their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration district, they lived at Main Street, Calverton, they had 4 children, Charles Leslie born 31st August 1906, Herbert born 17th November 1907, Henry Ronald born 14th April 1909 and Frank born 30th March 1911.

In the 1911 census the family are living at Main Street, Calverton, Herbert 27 yrs is a butcher he is living with his wife Mary 27 yrs and teir children, Leslie 4 yrs, Herbert 3 yrs of age, Henry 1 year old and Frank under1 month.

Commencing 25th March 1918 his widow was awarded a pension of 28 shillings and 9 pence a week.

Military history

A pension record has been found for Herbert Turton which shows he originally joined the Army on 9th April 1908 at Calverton, at this time he was 24 yrs of age and a butcher employed by his father .His service number is 735 and he is serving with the 8th Battalion, Sherwood Foresters .On the 5th August 1914 he is discharged after being found unfit on mobilization. He had home service of 6yrs and 126 days his service dates being 9/4/08-6/8/14.The record also states his wife to be Mary. He must have however later re joined the army as he is shown as being killed in action France & Flanders His name is commemorated on the Menin Gate memorial, Ypres, Belgium
