James Lawrence Allum was born on 28th January 1896 in Harrow, Middlesex, he was the only son of James a linoleum factory worker and Amelia Allum née Lawrence of 27 Farmers Road, EDgham, Staines.
His father James was born in 1872 at Hayes, Middlesex, his mother Amelia Lawrence was born in 1865 at Brightwell, Oxford they were married on 16th June 1894 at St Mary’s Church, Harrow.
In the 1911 census hsi family are living at 27 Farmers Road, Egham, Staines, James 39 yrs is a linoleum factory worker, he is living with his wife Amelia 46 yrs and their son John Lawrence Allum 14 yrs a shop boy.
Able seaman James Lawrence Allum enlisted on 23rd November 1915, he was part of a draft for the BEF on 25th July 1916.07/1916.
He served with Nelson Battalion from 16th September 1916 until his death, dying of wounds in 4th Casualty Clearing Station (shrapnel wound right leg 20/01/1917) on his birthday 28th January 1917.
For stealing a towel, he underwent a General Court Martial at Etaples on 14/08/1916, receiving 3 months Field Punishment No.2
