George Dobney (junior) was born in 1897 at Gosberton, Lincolnshire, he was baptised on 19th Decemebr 1897 at Gosberton, he was the son of George Dobney (senior) a farm foreman and Eliza Jane Dobney née Carr of Risegate, Gosberton. His father George Dobney (senior) was born in 1864 at Langtoft, Lincolnshire, his mother Eliza Jane Carr was born in 1868 at Gosberton, they were married on 1st June 1885 at St Nicholas Church, Deeping, Lincolnshire, they had 14 children, sadly two were to die in infancy or early childhood. In the 1911 census the family are living at Risegate, Gosberton, George 47 yrs is a farm foreman, he is living with his wife Eliza Jane 43 yrs and their children, Amos 20 yrs a farm labourer, Sarah Jane 15 yrs , George 13 yrs , Clara Maria 11 yrs, Nellie 7yrs, Walter 7 yrs, Joseph Waite 3 yrs and Hilda May 11 months old.
Private George Dobney enlisted at Nottingham whilst residing at Bilborough, Nottingham, he initially served with the service number 2187 in the South Notts Hussars, he was serving with the Machine Gun Corps when he was killed in action on 29th August 1918, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Vis-En-Artois Memorial, France.
The (indistinct) inscription on the Strelley War Memorial reads: 'George Dobney Pte South Notts Hussars. Killed near Monchy Au Preux, France Aug 29 1918. Attached as Gunner to the Bucks & Berks Yeomanry age 20.'
