Joseph Corthorn was born in 1879 at Islington, he was the son of the late William (1829-1896 and the late Helen (Ellen) Seddon (1841 - 1901)
Joseph was married to Alice Wardle (born 19th August 1884 at Lenton) They married at Lenton Church on January 2, 1904. They had four children, George William, born November 30, 1904, Joseph, born June 3, 1907, Thomas Edward, born July 22, 1910 and Edith Elizabeth, born February 14, 1913.
In the 1911 census the family had lived at 13 Lower Regent Street, Beeston, Nottingham, Joseph 32 yrs an ironfitter is living with his wife Alice 26 yrs and their children, George 6 yrs, Joseph3 yrs and Edward under 1 year of age.
The family later moved to 3 Chancery Place, Broad Marsh, Nottingham.
Commencing 20th March 1916 his widow was awarded a pension of 23 shillings and 6 pence a week.
Quarter Master Sergeant, Joseph Corthorn had served in the Sherwood Foresters and had been in the Army Reserve. He had also taken part in the South African War. As a result he attested on November 2, 1914 at Nottingham giving his age as 38 yrs and 81 days, he was an iron foundry worker. On November 13th he was posted to 14th Battalion, Sherwood Foresters. He was appointed paid lance sergeant on November 27th, and promoted to full sergeant on December 10, 1914. The battalion was sent to Egypt and on February22, 1915 he was promoted to acting quartermaster sergeant at the Base Headquarters Mediterranean Expeditionary Force at Alexandria. Unfortunately, he contracted dysentery and died at 17th General Hospital on September 5, 1915. He was buried at Alexandria (Chatby) Military & War Memorial Cemetery.
