Family History
Father: John Ashton, born in 1855 in Lincoln, working as a watchmaker. Mother: Harriett Elizabeth Ashton, born 1856 at Donnington, Shropshire. Sister: Mary Louise, born in 1885, working as a watch maker's assistant. Brother: Cecil, born in 1891, working as a watch maker's assistant. The family lived at 17 Arkwright Street, Meadows, Nottingham. Frederick Ashton attended Mundella Secondary School.
Military History
Frederick Ashton was called up and following training he was drafted to France, joining 155th Siege Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery. He was situated in the Ypres Salient whilst the Battle of the Somme raged, but was accidentally killed on 24/10/1916. He was buried at Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery. (grave ref X.B.41A)
