Formerly a cab man, he joined the Midland Railway Police as a constable on 2nd August 1907 and was stationed at Nottingham.

Walter Richard John Meakin was born on 6th May 1880 at Derby, he was the son of the late William Meakin a garden labourer and Hannah Meakin née Taylor of 80 Richmond Road, Derby.
His father William Meakin was born in 1842 at Sawley, he died in 1902 aged 60 yrs his mother Hannah Taylor was born in 1841 at Syston, they were married on 17th November 1879 at St James, Derby.
Walter Richard John Meakin married Mary Kelly (born 3rd January 1885 at Polesworth, Tamworth) they were married in 1906 at Derby, Mary brought a child to the marriage Henry Archer Perry born 1st January 1906, they went on to have 3 further children, William Richard 10th May 1907, Henrietta Bertha born 12th October 1909 and Walter Stanley born 4th August 1915, the family lived at 13 Washington Terrace, Deering Street, Nottingham.
In the 1911 census the family were living at 7 Imperial Road, Beeston, Walter Meakin 30 yrs is a railway policeman, he is living with his wife Mary 25 yrs and their children Archer 5 yrs, William 3 yrs and Henrietta 1 year of age.
Commencing 6th August 1917 his widow was awarded a pension of 28 shilings and 9 pence a week.
Rifleman Walter Richard John Meakin enlisted at Woolwich he volunteered at the beginning of the war and was initially recruited to the 17th Lancers as a Trooper on 7 September 1914, later transferring to the Royal Irish Rifles. He was killed in action on 22nd January 1917 and is buried in the Berks Cemetery Extension Belgium Grave Reference: l.K.9
