Family history

Arthur William Ramsay was born in 1889 at Wandsworth he was the son of Henry Leslie a decorative artist and Mary Isabella Ramsey nee Charlton of 16, West Side, Wandsworth Common, London. His brother Charles Owen Ramsey also fell.

His father Henry Leslie was born in 1847 at Richmomd, his mother Mary Isabella Charlton was born in 1852 at Newcastle, they were married in 1879 at Tynemouth and went on to have 7 children.

In the 1911 census the family are living at 78 The Grove, Wandsworth, London, Henry Leslie 64 yrs is a decorative artist, he is living with his wife Mary Isabella 59 yrs and their children, Kathleen Marion 31 yrs s saleswoman at the Victoria and Albert museum, Arthur William 22 yrs a clerk, Charles Owen 20 yrs a clerk and Joyce 16 yrs a scholar.

Military history

He served with the 3rd battalion The Buffs (East Kent Regiment ) and was attached to the 2nd battalion Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers He was killed in action on 12th April 1915 having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Ypres Menin Gate Memorial

His brother was Charles Owen Ramsey who was a second lieutenant who served with the 12/13th battalion Northumberland Fusiliers who died on 21st March 1918 and whose name is commemorated on the Poziers memorial
