Family history

George was born in 1893 the son of Herbert and Mary Ann Thornton of 33, Spring Gardens, Long Acre, Bingham. In 1901, he lived with his parents and siblings Sarah, Ernest and Charlotte at Aslockton. His father was a farm carter. In 1911, they lived on Union Street, Bingham. He married Martha Cowdell during the second quarter of 1915. Martha married William Buttress in 1919 and lived at Saxondale, Bingham, Nottingham

His widow was awarded a pension of 13 shillings and 9 pence a week which commenced on 27th May 1918.

Military history

Private George Thornton enlisted at Bingham he served with the 16th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, and was killed in action. 10th November 1917 having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Panel 99 to 102 and 162 to 162A

The Battalion relieved the 17th BATTALION SHERWOOD FORESTERS in the right SUB SECTION POLDERHOEK SECTION whilst the relief was in progress 5 men were killed and 6 wounded. Total casualties for the day 5 killed 8 wounded.
