George Austin Clayton was born in 1899 at Stapleford, he was the son of Amos Jackson a pipe maker and Sarah Jane Clayton née Ward and the brother of Alice, Flossie and Hilda Clayton of 4 Cyril Avenue Stapleford Nottinghamshire.

His father Amos Jackson was born in 1861 at Satley, Leicestershire, his mother Sarah Jane Ward was born in 1872 at Gaddesby, Leicester, they were married in 1896 their marriage was recorded in the Shardlow registration district, they went on to have 4 children.

In the 1911 census the family are living at Cyril Aveneu, Stapleford, Amos Jackson 50 yrs is a pipe moulder at an iron foundry, he is living with his wife Sarah Jane 39 yrs and their children, George Austin 12 yrs a scholar, Alice 9 yrs, Flossie 8 yrs and Hida 5 yrs of age, also at the address are 2 lodger, Anne Ward 74 yrs married and George Ward 64 yrs a farm labourer,

Military history

Private George Austin Clayton enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 3rd battalion Grenadier Guards he was killed in action on 20th May 1916, he is buried at Potijze Burial Ground Cemetery
