Walter Woodward was born in 1889 at Nottingham, he was the son of George Woodward a railway porter and the late Ann Woodward née Simpson of 9 Clayton Terrace, Clayton Street, Nottingham. His father George was born in 1848 at Gloucester, his mother Ann Simpson was born in 1848 at Sheffield she died in 1909 at Basford, she was aged 61 yrs, they were married in 1873 at Nottingham, they went on to have 5 children. In the 1911 census the family are living at 9 Clayton Terrace, Clayton Street, Nottingham George Woodward 63 yrs a widow and railway porter is living with his daughter Mary Jane 29 yrs a dress maker and Walter 22 yrs a warehouse clerk. Walter married Nellie Heath (born 1st December 1888) on 15th April 1911 at St Georges Church, Nottingham they lived at 61 Portland Street, Nottingham and had 2 daughters, Phyllis Nellie born 10th February 1913 and Winifred Irene born 25th February 1916. Commencing 28th July 1917 his widow was awarded a pension of 25 shillings and 5 pence a week.
Private Walter Woodward enlisted on 31st May 1916 at Nottingham, giving his age as 27 yrs and 24 days, he was a clerk living at 42 Portland Street, Nottingham, he was posted to the reserves and mobilised on 7th July 1916 and posted to the 11th battalion Lincolnshire Regiment. He embarked from Folkstone on 10th November 1916 arriving in Boulogne the same day. He died of wounds on 29th December 1917, he is buried at Cambrin Military Cemetery, France.
Death noticies published 17th January 1918 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “WOODWARD. – Killed in action on December 29th, 1917, Pte. Walter Woodward, much loved husband of Nellie Woodward, 61 Portland-road. The great sacrifice. Deeply mourned.“WOODWARD. – Killed in action on December 29th, 1917, Pte. Walter Woodward, Trench Mortar Battery, for 14 years much valued servant of J. M. Perry and Co., Ltd. [1] Now deeply regretted. He was a member of the office staff of Mr Perry in Stanford Street, he leaves a widow and two little girls.'
