John Clarke (junior) was born in 1883 at Nottingham, he was the son of John Clarke (senior) a labourer and Ann Clarke of 421 Alfreton Road, Nottingham.
His father John Clarke (senior) was born in 1857 at Radford, his mother Elizabeth Clarke née Ley was born in 1855 at Nottingham, they were married in 1881 at Nottingham they had 5 children.
In the 1911 census the family are living at 26 Player Street, Radford, John Clarke (senior) 54 years of age is a labourer, he is living with his wife Elizabeth56 yrs and their children, Nelly 28 yrs a jennier, John 27 yrs a colliery labourer, George 25 yrs a porter, Ada 24 yrs a machinist and Elizabeth 20 yrs a machinist.
Private John Clarke enlisted at Nottingham he served with the 1st battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment and went to France on 11th December 1914 he was killed in action, on 22nd December 1914, aged 32, whilst serving in the line at Red Farm, near Richebourg, France. Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Le Touret Memorial, France.
