Horace was born in 1893 in Ilkeston he was baptised aged 6 on 25th February 1900 at Radford, he was the son of James a farm labourer and the late Katherine Beet and he was the brother of Nellie, Katherine, Henrietta and Fred of Hempshall Hall Lodge, near Nottingham.
His father was born in 1862 at Stoke Bardolph, his mother Katherine Pilkington was born in 1863 at Nottingham, she died in 1904 aged 42 yrs, they were married on 3rd October 1880 at St Marys Church, Nottingham, they went on to have 6 children.
Horace married Alice Annie Bates in 1915 in Nottingham they lived at Bingham Road, Radcliffe on Trent. Commencing 7th July 1919 his widow was awarded a pension of 13 shillings and 9 pence a week.
Gunner Horace Beet, served with the 1st Divisional Ammunition Column, Royal Field Artillery, he landed in France on 16th August 1914 he died on 26th December 1918 at 54th General Hospital, of influenza and pneumonia. He is buried in Terlincthun British Cemetery, Wimille, grave reference XII D44
In memoriam published 26th December 1919 in the Nottingham Evening Post :-
“BEET. – In loving remembrance of my dear brother, Horace Beet, died December 26th, 1918, British Hospital, France, after 4½ years' service. We miss him most who loved him best. – Loving sister Hetty.”
