Family history

Vincent Matthews was born in 1885 at Luton, he was the youngest son of Thomas a journeyman tailor and Emma Matthews née Hyde and the sister of Ethel Matthews of 14 The Promenade Nottingham.

His father Thomas was born in 1854 at Kimpton, Hertfordshire, his mother Emma Hyde was born in 1854 at Redbourn, Hertfordshire they were married on 28th November 1876 at Kimpton, Hertfordshire, they went on to have 9 children, sadly 3 were to die in infancy or ealy childhood.

In the 1911 census his father Thomas 57 yrs is living in the Nottingham convelecent home, Roman Bank, Skegness

In the same 1911 census his mother and siblings are living at 14 The Promenade, Victoria Park, Nottingham, Emma 57 yrs is living with her children, Vincent 25 yrs a tailr coat maker and Ethel 29 yrs a blouse machinist.

Military history

Private Vincnt Matthews enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 1/5th Northumberland Fusiliers, he was killed in action on 14th November 1916, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.
