Harry Stones was born in 1899 at Nottingham, he was the son of Jackson Stones a lace maker and Sarah Stones née Bentley of 85 Radford Boulevard, Radford, Nottingham.
his father Jackson was born in 1871 at Luddington Yorkshire, he died in 1928 aged 57 yrs, his mother Sarah Bentey was born in 1880 they were married on 28th May 1898 at St John's Church Carrington, they had 7 children, sadly 1 was to die in infancy or early childhood,
Their children included: Harry (b.1898), Lucy May (b.1899), Nelly (b.1901), Ada Muriel (b.1903), Florence Emily (b.1905), William Jackson (b.1911) and Doris (b.1912).
In the 1911 cenesus the family lived at 13 Wentworth Road, Hayden Road, Sherwood, Nottingham, Jackson 40 yrs is a lace maker, he is living with his wife Sarah 30 yrs and their children, Harry 12 yrs, Lucy May 11 yrs,Nellie 9 yrs, Ada Muriel 7 yrs, Florence Emily 5 yrs and William Jackson under 1 month old.
The Stones family lived at: 8 Kirk Cottages, Bulwell [C.1901]; 13 Wentworth Road, off Haydn Road, Sherwood, Nottingham [C.1911]; 74 Garfield Road, Radford {Army records/1915]. A death notice for Private H. Stones placed in the local newspaper gave his home address as 85 Radford Boulevard, Radford [n.e.p.23.8.1917]. This same address was recorded in the post-war CWGC records. Jackson Stones, who worked as a lace maker [C.1911], died at Nottingham, aged 57, in 1928. His widow, Sarah, died at Nottingham, aged 68, in 1948.
Private Harry Stones enlisted at Nottingham on 3 September 1915 claiming he was 19 years and 300 days old; (actually born 1899 ) living at 74 Garfield Road, Radford, initially assigned to the 3/1st North Midland Divisional Cyclist Company [Service No.301]; transferred to the 2/Army Cyclists Corps on 1 November 1916; suffered gun shot wound to his right thigh, suffered contusions to his left thigh and was affected by gas poisoning - from which he eventually died; on 2nd August 1917, he is buried in the Abbeville Communal Cemetery Extension, Somme, France.
