Alfred was born in 1896 at Misterton he was the son of Robert John a farmer, and Sarah Stones née Middleton who were living in Misterton when Albert was born It was around 1907 when the family moved to Scrooby.
His father Robert John was born in 1874 at Belton, Lincolnshre, his mother Sarah Middleton was born in 1872 at Lound, Nottinghamshire, they were married in 1894 their marriage was recorded in the Gainsborough registration district, they went on to have 5 children.
In the 1911 census the family is living at Scrooby, Bawtry, Robert John 37 yrs is a farmer he is living with his wife Sarah 39 yrs and their children, Alfred 15 yrs a farmers son working on a farm, Edith Annie 7 yrs, Gordon 5 yrs and Doris 2 years of age.
Private Alfred Stones enlisted at Retford and joined the 1st battalion Sherwood Foresters Notts and Derbyshire Regiment. His end came on the 14th July 1916 in France, age 20, when he died of his wounds inflicted upon him. He is buried in Boulogne Eastern Cemetery grave reference VIII D 117

News has been received that Pte Alfred Stones, son of Mr R J Stones, and lately resident at Scrooby, has died in hospital subsequently to being severly wounded at the front at the early age of 20. Pte Stones enlisted in the 1st Sherwood Foresters early in September 1914 and within six months was en route for France after a short training at Whitley Bay. He received severe wounds in the head and eyes in the early stages of the great move now in progress being struck by fragments of a bursting shell. He was moved to the 13th Stationary hospital at Boulogne along with other serious cases and lingering a week before the end came. In civil life the deceased was employed in the new section of railway connecting to the Harworth Pit with the GNER main line at Scrooby. His family have sympathy with a large circle of friends in their great loss.
His name is on Ranskill Window 2 and also on the granite column memorial at Scrooby along with five other fallen.
