Percival Spencer was born in 1895 at Nottingham, he was the son of George a steel bar maker and Emma Spencer née Turner and the brother of Henrietta, George, Stanley and Horace Victor Spencer.
His father George was born in 1862 at Whitechaple, London, his mother Emma Harriet Turner was born in 1868 at Nottingham, they were married on 25th October 1890 at St Ann's parish church, Nottingham, they went on to have 7 children, sadly two were to die in infancy or early childhoo
In the 1911 census the family lived at 9 Smith Street Radford Nottingham George Spencer 49 yrs is a steel bar maker, he is living with his wife Emma 43 yrs and their children, Henrietta 20 yrs a cardboard box maker, Percy 15 yrs a solicitors office boy, George 11 yrs a scholar and chemist errand lad, Stanley 7 yrs and Horace Victor 4 yrs of age.
Private Percival Spencer enlited at Nottingham, he served with the 1/7th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he went to France 28th June 1915. he was killed in action, 1st July 1916, aged 21, in the attack on the German positions at Gommecourt, France, on the first day of the Battle of the Somme.
Commemorated : Thiepval Memorial, France. Pier and Face 10 C 10 D and 11 A.
This casualty has recently been accepted for commemoration by CWGC.
