Herbert Greenhalgh was born on 3rd December 1894 at Nottingham, he was the son of Samuel and Mary Elizabeth Greenhalgh of 9 Ash Street Peas Hill Road Nottingham.

His father Samuel was born in 1862 at Nottingham he died in 1917 aged 55 yrs, his mother Mary Elizabeth was born in 1861 at Nottingham she died in 1899 aged 38 yrs, they were married in 1891 at Nottingham, they had a further child Samuel born 1891

In the 1911 census he is living at 17 Citadel Street, Nottingham, he is shown as being 16 yrs single and an assistant machinist in tobacco packaging. he is living with his uncle Charles Allen 53 yrs a coal miner and his family.

Military history

Trumpeter Herbert Greenhalgh enlisted on 7th July 1915 at Toronto in Canada giving his age as 20 yrs and 7 months, his occupation was that of a bellman he was posted to the 9th Bde Canadian Field Artillery he was killed in action on 28th June 1918 he is buried at Aire Communal Cemetery, France.
