Herbert was born on 3rd February 1885 in Retford he was baptised on 5th August 1885 at St Saviours Church, Retfrd, he was the son of the late Robert a maltsters labourer and Sarah Ann Cooling, (nee Creasey) of Bollyam Lane, Retford,

His father Robert was born in 1841 at Newark, he died in 1907 aged 56 yrs his mother Sarah Creasey was born in 1849 at Misterton they were married in 1880 their marriage was recordedint eSleaford registration district, they had a large family of 11 children however only eight of them had survived by the 1911 census.

In the 1911 census the family are living at Bolliam Lane, Retford by this time his mother Sarah Ann 62 yrs is a widow and has four children living with her at this address , William , Herbert who is 26 years of age , single and a railway labourer and daughters Alice and Elizabeth.

Military history

Herbert enlisted in Retford and his medal card indicates he first went to France on 12th November 1914 , he was killed in action on 24th January 1916 and he is buried in Rue-Du-Bacqueret 913th London) Graveyard, Laventie, Pas-De-Calais
