Arthur Charman was born at West Stockwith in 1899, he was the only child of William Bennetta and Mary Charman (nee Ward ) his father worked as a cooper in the local Morris' Chemical Works.

Hs father William Bennett was born in 1870 at Durham, his mother Mary Ward was born in 1870 at Swinton, Yorkshire, they were married in 1897 at Swinton, Yorkshire.

In the 1911 census the family are shown living at Beulah Lodge, Trent Side, West Stockwith William Bennett 41 yrs is a cooper, he is living with his wife Mary 41 yrs and their son Arthur 12 yrs of age a sholar.

Military history

He enlisted into the Army at East Retford, he was killed in action and his name is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, France
