The Vernon family had come to Worksop from Clowne after 1901. Arthur Vernon, a coal miner, had married Lucy Allison in 1884. they had nine children, eight born in Clowne, Arthur Henry 1886, Mary 1888, Annie E 1889, Samuel 1891, Lucy 1898, Esther 1894, Enoch 1895, Ruth 1900 and James born in Worksop in 1907.
His father Arthur Vernon was born In Worksop in 1853 at Bedworth, Warwickshire he died in Worksop in 1909 aged 56 yrs his mother Lucy Allison was born in 1855 at East Markham, she died in 1918 aged 63 yrs, they were married in 1884 the family found residence at number 6 Manvers Street, where Arthur senior and junior were coal mining and Enoch, as a 16 year old pit pony driver.
His next of kin was his sister Lucy Vernn.
Private Enoch Vernon enlisted on 7th September 1914 into the Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he was transferred on 16th September 1914 to the Royal Marines Light Infantry. H was wounded in action on Gallipoli and died of his wounds aboard Hospital Ship "Gloucester Castle, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Chatham Naval Memorial.
Pte. Enoch Vernon Worksop Guardian 28 May 1915 :-
Official information has been received of the death in action at the Dardanelles of Pte Enoch Vernon, son of Mrs and the late Mr Arthur Vernon, of 6 Manvers Street, Worksop. He died gallantly fighting for his country, and sincere sympathy will be extended to his relatives. On the outbreak of war, Pte Vernon, who was at the time employed by Mr George Neal, John Street, Worksop, enlisted in the Royal Marines and proceeded to the Dardanelles on Feb. 6th.
