Family history

Henry was born in 1899 in Calverton he was the son of the late Rueben Cornelius Cooper a farm labourer and Sarah Ann Cooper née Haywood of Calverton.

His father Rueben Cornelius was born in 1861 at Basford, he died in 1899 at Nottingham, he was 38 yrs of age, his mother Sarah Ann Haywood was born in 1864 at Calverton, they were married on 26th October 1891 at St Wilfrids Church, Calverton, they had 3 children, Mary Ann Cooper born 1890, Sarah Hannah Cooper born 1892 and Henry Cooper born 1899.

Following the death of his father his mother went on to remarry John Binch (born 1852 Calverton,) in 1904 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district.

In the 1911 census he is shown as being 12 years a scholar and living opposite the church (Main St) Calverton. At this time he is living with John Binch 59 yrs shown as father a frame work knitter and Sarah Ann Binch 46yrs his mother and Agnes Binch 23 yrs a maker up in hosiery trade, Mary Ann Cooper 20 yrs a point seamer in hosiery trade, Sarah Hannah Cooper 19 yrs a frame work knitter, Henry Cooper 12 yrs a scholar and George Wilfred Birch 6 yrs a scholar.

Military history

Private Henry Cooper enlisted at Hucknall whilst residing at Calverton,on 3rd June 1916, giving his address as opposite The Church, Mani Street, Calverton, he was 17 yrs and 7 months old, he was a hosiery hand, he was posted to the reserves and was mobilised for war on 5th April 1917 he was posted to a training battalion he landed in France on 27th February 1918 and was posted to the 2/5th battalion West Riding Regiment, on 25th July 1918, hed was killed in action on 25th August 1918, France & Flanders.he is buried at Gomiecourt South Cemetery , France
