Arthur was the son of Herbert and Sarah Elizabeth Flinders née Wood.
His father was born in 1863 at Radford and his mother in 1863 at Weedon in Buckinghamshire. They were married in Nottingham on 15th May 1887. Arthur's siblings, both born at Sheffield, were Herbert b.1889 and Albert b.1891.
Herbert died in 1893 in Nottingham aged 30 and on 11th February 1889 Sarah married Albert Bolton. Sarah and Albert had five children all born in Nottingham: Thomas, Alma, Frank, Alec and Louis.
In 1911 Arthur Flinders 23 yrs an ink manuafacturers colour grinder is living with his brother Albert Flinders 19 yrs a rag worker, they lived at 1 Albion Terrace Standhill Road Carlton with is father in law Albert Bolton 37 yrs a briclayers labourer and his wife Elizabeth Bolton 42 yrs.
Arthur married Gertrude Howitt(born 17th November 1892) in 1913 at Nottingham and they lived at 114 Montpelier Road Dunkirk Nottingham they had a son Arthur Ernest born 28th July 1914.
Commencing 3rd September 1917 his widow was awarded a pension of 18 shilings and 9 pence a week.
Arthur Flinders enlisted in Nottingham and served with North Midland Division Cycle Corps and then transferred to the 18th Battalion King's Liverpool Regiment . He was shot by a sniper and killed on 27th February 1917, he is buried at Avesnes-Le-Comte Communal Cemetery Extension Grave Reference: IV B 19
Nottingham Evening Post notice (abridged) 10 March 1917: 'Flinders. Killed in action in February, Private Arthur Flinders of Dunkirk. Eight years with Atkin Brothers, Radford. Wife.'
