Family history

Joseph Swain was born in 1870 at Hucknall he was the son of the late James and Rebecca Swain.

Joseph married Lily Neville (born 23rd April 1868 Wombwell) in 1890 at Rotherham.

They went on to have six children , however 3 died in infancy or early childhood. Their surviving children were all born in Wombwell and were Doris Mary b.1898, Lillian b1.900 and Alex Neville b.1904.

In the 1911 census the family lived at 91 Barnsley Road, Wombwell, Yorkshire. Joseph 41 yrs years a colliery deputy, he is living with his wife Lily 42 yrs and their children, Doris May 13 yrs, Lillian 11 yrs and Alec Neville 7 yrs of age.

Military history

Company Sergeant Major Joseph Swain, had originally enlisted into the army on 25th February 1900 at Pontefract .He served during the Boer War and was later discharged. When war broke out he again enlisted at Wath on Dearne whilst residing at Wombwell. He landed in France on 13th April 1915 and died of wounds at No. 8 Stationary Hospital, Wimereux on 15th July 1915. He is buried in Wimereux Communal Cemetery.
