Family history

George Alfred Boulton (served as Alfred Boulton) was born in 1890 in Keyworth and was the son of William a bricklayers labourer and Mary Elizabeth Boulton née Pike of 95 Waterway Street West, Nottingham.

His father was born in 1858 in Keyworth and his mother Mary Elizabeth Pike was born in 1860 in Keyworth, they were married in 1881 their marriage was recorded in the Bingham Registration District, his mother brought a son John Pike b1880 to the marriage, they went on to have 14 children sadly 5 of whom died in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children were William b1885 Radford, Arthur b1887 Keyworth, Andrew b1888 Keyworth, Mary b1889 Keyworth, George Alfred b1890 Keyworth, Isabella b1893 Keyworth, Thomas b1895 Nottingham and Ernest b1899 Nottingham.

In the 1901 census the family were living at 10 Finkhill Street Nottigham and by the 1911 census were living at 95 Waterway Street West, Nottingham.

George Alfred married his wife Edith Annie Wright (born 5th May 1889) on 6th April 1912 at St Peters Church, Manfield, they went on to have 2 sons, Alfred Ernest born on 15th August 1912 at Mansfield and Sydeny born 11th January 1914. at Mansfield.

Commencing 19th July 1915 his widow was awarded a pension of 18 shillinmgs and 6 pence a week.

His widow later remarried to become Mrs Gibson and lived at 29 Chaucer Street, Mansfield, Nottinghamshire.

Military history

Lance Corporal 13553 Alfred Boulton, enlisted at Derby on 10th January 1908 and initially served with the 4th battalion Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment. During the war he served with 2nd Battalion Grenadier Guards. He landed in France on 23rd November 1914 . He was killed in action 1st January 1915 and is buried in Le Touret Military Cemetery, Richbourgg L’Avoue, grave reference I B 16.

Name included on Castle Gate Congregational Church ROH printed January 1917: Corporal GA Boulton, Gren. Guards (Nottinghamshire Archives ref DD2325/10). No CWGC record GA Boulton, Grenadier Guards however he served as Alfred BOULTON and details confirmed.
