He left his wife a note written on Church Army & Church of England Men's Society notepaper: Dear Wife, there's something gone wrong in my head, this last night through. So ignorant in 1914 and volunteering I have tried to do my bit, but failed through ??? supposed to be from home. I can't write no more."
