Herbert Balfe Thompson was born on 9th April 1890, he was baptised on 18t May 1890 at St Thomas, Heaton Norris, Lancashire, he was the son of Sidney Thompson a manager at a cotton doubling mill and Emma Thompson née Balfe of Clipstone Avenue, Mansfield.
His father Sidney was born in 1863 at Thorne, Yorkshire, his mother Emma Balfe was born in 1868 at Stockport, they were married on 17th December 1888 at St Mary’s Church, Reddish, Lancashire. They went on to have 3 children.
In the 1911 census the family are living at Clipstone Avenue, Mansfield, Sidney 43 yrs is a manager at a cotton doubling mill, he is living with his wife Emma 43 yrs and their children, Herbert 20 yrs single a clerk in a cotton doubling mill, Annie Gladys 16 yrs and Marjorie Sybil 8 years of age.
Captain Herbert Balfe Thompson enlisted on 7th September 1914, he was commissioned to Sherwood Foresters on 2nd December 1914 as a 2nd Lieutenant then transferred to Lincolnshire Regiment. Promoted in the field whilst serving in Gallipoli. He was killed in action on 18th September 1916 and is buried at Aveluy Communal Cemetery Extension, France.
