Family history

William Harold Foster known as Harold was born on 16th May 1894 at Langwith he was the son of William a coal miner and Rosetta Foster née Hesketh of 80 Broxtowe Drive, Mansfield.

His father William was born in 1873 at Nuthall, his mother Rosetta Hesketh was born in 1872 also at Nuthall, they were married in 1893 they marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they had 5 further children, Lilly born 1895, Florence 1900, Hilda b1904, Ivy born 1906 and Ernest Cyril born 1912.

Military history

Private Harold Foster he was a coal miner at Crown Farm Colliery, Mansfield prior to enlisting 7th March 1913 at Mansfield. He went to France 2nd March 1915 and was killed in action, 30th April 1915, age 20, whilst serving in the line at Kemmel, Belgium.

Buried : Kemmel Chateau Military Cemetery, Belgium. Row E. Grave 86.

Mansfield Chronicle Advertiser, 13/05/1915; Photograph. Aged 20. His last letter home was received on 01/05/1915, the day after his death. In the letter he asked them to send milk and thanked them for the cake he had received.
