Family History

Charles Wilfred Henson was born on 25th Janaury 1892at Trowell, he was the son of Thomas a farmer and Mary Ann Henson née Hodgkinson of Mill Farm, Strelley. His father Thomas was born in 1858, his mother Mary Ann Hodgkinson was born in 1862 both were born at Kimberley they were married in 1884 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they went on to have 5 children, In the 1911 census the family are living at Mill Farm Strelley, Thomas 53 yrs is a farmer, he is living with his wife Mary Ann 48 yrs and their children, Thomas Cecil 28 yrs a coal miner hewer, Harold 23 yrs a coal miner loader, Samuel Remey 21 yrs a colliery labourer, Charles Wilfred 19 yrs a colliery labourer and Sidney Scott 14 yrs a farm labourer.

Military History

Private Charles Wilfred Henson, enlisted at Kimberley on 11th December 1915 he was 23yrs and 10 months old, he was living at Mill Farm Strelley , he was a cowman, his next of kin was his father Thomas of Church Farm Strelley, his religion was that of Church of England. The following day his was posted to the reserves. Finally on 20th June 1918 he was mobilised for war and on 22nd June 1918 was posted to 5th (Reserve) Battalion Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment. He was admitted on 1st August 1918 to the Borough Isolation Hospital, Ipswich, with 'Spanish fever' and died at the hospital on 20th August 1918. He is buried in Strelley (All Saints) Churchyard, dedication on cwgc headstone : 'Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God'.

His name is on the Rushcliffe Absent Voters List: 'Charles Wilfred Henson, Church Farm, 119043 (sic) Pte, 5th Notts and Derby Rgt.'His name is included on the Roll of Honour in All Saints Church (WMA59095), 'Wilfrid (sic) Henson', but he is not named on the Strelley War Memorial in All Saints churchyard.In memoriam published 20th August 1919 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “HENSON. – In loving memory of Pte. C. W. Henson, 5th Notts. and Derbys., who died August 20th, 1918, age 26.
