Family History

Henry Edwin Smith known as ‘Harry’ was born in 1895 at Ilkeston junction, he was the son of William Henry Smith a lace maker and Harriett Elizabeth Smith nee Wilkinson of 43 Digby Street, Ilkeston junction. His father William Henry was born in 1867 at Nottinghamshire, his mother Harriett Elizabeth Wilkinson was born in 1868 also in Nottinghamshire, they were married on 24th December 1886 in St Ann’s, Nottingham, they had 9 children, sadly 2 were to die in infancy or early childhood, In the 1911 census the family are living at Digby Ave, Ilkeston junction, William Henry 44 yrs is a lace maker, he is living with his wife Harriett Elizabeth 43 yrs and their children, Florence Ethel 21 yrs a slip winder, Kate Elizabeth 28 yrs a slip winder, Beatric Maud 11 yrs a scholar, Henry Edwin 16 yrs a lace curtain maker, Arthur 14 yrs a lace curtain maker and Constance Maud 4 weeks old.

Military History

Sergeant Harry Smith enlisted at Ilkeston and served with the 7th battalion Lincolnshire Regiiment. He died of wounds on 19th January 1918 and is buried in Outtersteene Communal Cemetery Extension Bailleul, France grave reference 2.D.44
