Family history

Frederick Smith was born in 1873 at Lenton,

He married Clara May Smith, nee Archer, (born 19th December 1877 ) in 1901 at Nottingham and they lived at 61 Park Street, New Lenton, Nottingham, and had seven children Clara Miriam born 19th June 1904, Jack born 2nd November 1908, Fred born 19th March 1910, Tom born 4th December 1911, Maud Mary born 9th November 1913 and Charles 23rd March 1916.

In the 1911 census the family are living at 17 Bradbury Stree, Sneinton, Nottingham, Frederick 38 yrs is a hardware shop assistant, he is living with his wife Clara 33 yrs and their children, Arthur 8 yrs old, Clara 6 yrs, Jack 2 yrs and Fred 1 year old.

Commencing 2nd June 1919 a pension of 42 shllings and 1 pence was paid to Mr W Harris Nottingham war pension committee Burton Buildings 7 Upper Parliament Street, Nottingham,

Military history

Driver Frederick Smith enlisted at Nottingham,he served with the 152nd Royal Field Artillery following training Smith had been drafted to France and had survived the war, only to be laid low by the influenza pandemic which was sweeping through the armies during the autumn of 1918. He was taken to a casualty clearing station near Courtrai, but died on 16th November 1918. He was buried at Kortrijk (St Jan) Communal Cemetery, West Vlaanderen, Belgium A.10

Obituaries published 29th November 1918 in the Nottingham Evening Post :-

“SMITH. – On the 16th inst., in France, of influenza, Driver Fred Smith, R.F.A., beloved husband of Clara Smith. – Deeply mourned by his sorrowing wife and seven children.

“SMITH. – On the 16th inst., in France, of influenza, Driver Fred Smith, R.F.A., late of Fleeman's, Broad-marsh. – Fondly remembered by his father and sisters.”

In memoriam published 17th November 1919 in the Nottingham Evening Post :-

“SMITH. – In loving memory of Driver Fred Smith, R.F.A., who died of pneumonia, in France, November 16th, 1918. – Sorrowing wife and children.

“SMITH. – In memory of Driver Fred Smith of the Royal Field Artillery, died in France, November 16th, 1918. Cherished memories. – Mother, George, and Elsie.”
