Walter Kirk was born in Eastwood in 1884 he was the son of Arthur a coal miner hewer and Sarah Ann Kirk née Harrison of 12 Montague Street, Mansfield.
His father Arthur was born in 1860 at Newthorpe, his mother Sarah Ann Harrison was born in 1859 at Bagworth, they were married on 18th June 1883 at St Mary's Church, Greasley, they went on to have 5 children, sadly 1 died in infancy or early childhood.
In the 1911 census the family lived at 12 Montague Street, Mansfield, Arthur 60 yrs is a coal miner hewer, he is living with his wife Sarah Ann 61 yrs and their children, Wilfred Henry 14 yrs a pony driver coal miner and Archie George 8 yrs
In the 1911 census , Walter has left the family home , he is a boarder living at 83 West Gate, Mansfield, he is 27 yrs of age and is a coal miner hewer he is boarding with Jarvis Gollngs 49 yrs a coal miner and his family.
Walter Kirk married Gladys Smith (born 12th September 1898 ) in 1914 their marriage was recorded in the Shardlow registration district and lived at 218 College Street, Long Eaton, they had a son Leonard Godber born18th June 1917.1917.
Following his death his widow Gladys was awarded a pension of 18 shillings and 9 pence a week which commenced on 29th April 1918.

His widow Gladys re married in 1921 to Francis Smith their marriage was recorded in the Shardlow registration district. They lived at 132 St Augustine Road, Southsea.
Gunner Walter Kirk enlisted at Ilkeston and served with 'F' Battalion Tank Corps. He died on 19th October 1917 of head injuries caused accidentally whilst on active service and is buried at Rucquoy Road Cemetery, Ficheux, France
