Family history

Richard Surgay was born on 1st June 1892 at Kimberley, he married Sarah Ann Watkinson (born 26th August 1890) in 1909 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they lived at 2 Caucel Place, Bulwell, Nottingham. They had the following children, William Ernest born 2nd May 1910, Ada Ellen born 29th November 1911 and Sarah Ann born 20th November 1913.

In the 1911 census the family are living at Kimberley Yard, Kimberley, Richard Surgay 20 yrs is a coal miner, he is living with his wife Sarah Ann 21 yrs and their son William Ernest 11 months old.

Commencing 4th June 1917 his widow was awarded a pension of 26 shillings and 3 pence a week.

His widow went on to remarry on 1st September 1917 to John Mathers a coal miner.

Military history

Private Richard Surgay enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 2nd battalion Grenadier Guards, he was killed in action on 15th September 1916, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, France.
