Family History

Ernest Lilley was born in 1895 at Kimberley, he was the son of Enoch a coal miner chargehand and Ann Lilley née Smith and the brother of Enoch, Charles William, Elsie, Hilda and Margaret Lilley. His father Enoch was born in 1857 his mother Mary Ann Smith was also born in 1857 both were born in Kimberley they were married on 11th June 1881 at Holy Trinity church, Kimberley, they went on to have 10 children, sadly 1 was to die in infancy or early childhood. In 1911 the family lived at Colliery Road, Swingate, Kimberley Enoch 54 yrs is a coal miner chargehand, he is living with his wife Mary Ann 54 yrs and their children, Enoch 27 yrs a coal miner contractor, Charles William 22 yrs a coal miner corporal, Elsie 18 yrs a french polisher, Hilda 13 yrs a scholar and Margaret 10 yrs a scholar.

Military History

Gunner Ernest Lilley enlisted at Kimberley, he served with the 162 nd Anti Aircraft Section, Royal Garrison Artillery, he died on 10th August 1916 of peritonitis at No 1 General Hospital, London. He is buried at Kimberley Cemetery, Nottinghamshire.
