John Brown was born on 18th August 1894, he was baptised on 9th December 1894 at Holy Trinity Church, Kimberley he was the son of Edmund John a coal miner contractor and Alice Brown née Shaw and the brother of Selina, Samuel, Annie and Ethel Brown.of 1 Rockside, Kimberley,

His father Edmund John was born in 1862 at Babbington, his mother Alice Shaw was born in 1865 at Kimbelry, they were married in 1892 their marriage was recorded in he Basford registration distirict, they went on to have 5 chldren.

In the 1911 census the family lived on Victoria Street Kimberley Nottinghamshire Edmund John 49 yrs a coal miner contractor, he is living with his wife Alice Shaw 46 yrs and their children, Selina 18 yrs no occupation listed, John 16 yrs acoal miner, Samuel 15 yrs a coal miner, Annie 11 yrs and Ethel 8 yrs old.

Military history

Private John Brown enlisted on 22nd June 1914 at Kimberley, he wasa coal miner, he served with the 1st battalion Grenadier Guards, he was killed in action on 18th December 1914, he is buried at Y Farm Cemetery, Bois Grenier, France.

John Brown's brother Samuel lost an eye during the Great War serving with the Sherwood Foresters (see photo).
