Family history

Charles James Williams was born in 1880 at Lewisham, Kent, he was the son of James Charles Williams a police constable and the late Sarah Williams née Asprey of 12 Oswyth Road, Camberwell.

His father James Charles was born in 1851 at Hailbury,Somerset, his mother Sarah Asprey was born in 1854 at Mitcham, Surrey she died in 1913 aged 59 yrs, they were married on 16th October 1873 at St Peters Church, Mitcham, they went on to have 5 children, sadly 1 died in infancy or early childhood.

In the 1911 census his married mother is living at 12 Oswyth Road, Camberwell, she is 56 yrs is married and is a office cleaner, she is living with her daughter Beatrice, 21 yrs a waitree.

Charles James Williams married Jessie Warman (born 18th May 1880 in Devon) in 1907 at Camberwell, they went on to have a daughter Annie Gertrude born 23rd November 1909.

In the 1911 census the family are living at 23 Havil Street, Camberwll, Charles J 31 yrs is a timber marker, he is living with his wife Jessie 31 yrs and their daughter Annie Gertrude 1 year old.

Commencing 21st February 1916 his widow was awarded a pension of 17 shillings and 6 pence a week.

His widow remarried on 27th November 1917 to Private A Smith.

Military history

Rifleman Charles James Williams enlisted in London, he served with the 8th battalion King's Royal Rifle Corps, he was killed in action on 4th August 1915, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Ypres Menin Gate Memorial, Belgium
