Family history

William Wadewell Nicholls (junior) was born in 1897 at Stamford, Lincolnshire he was the son of William Wadwell Nicholls (senior) a journeyman baker and Louisa Nicholl née Dexter of 70 Turney Street, Nottingham.

His father William Wadwell Nicholls (senior) was born in 1870 at Caldicote, Rutland, his mother Louisa Dexter was born in 1872 at Oakham, Rutland, they were married in 1894 at Oakham, they had 5 children.

In the 1911 census the family are living at 155 Dame Agnes Street, Nottingham, Louisa 39 yrs (married) is living with her children, Gertrude 16 yrs, William Wadwell 14 yrs Frederick 12 yrs, Ada 9 yrs and Edna 3 months. Also living at the address is Adam Buckland 41yrs a boarder whom his mother went on to marry.

Military history

Sergeant William Wadwell Nicholls enlisted on 3rd October 1915 at Nottingham, giving his age as 19 yrs and 10 months, his address was 70 Turney Street, Nottingham he was a drapers assistant.

He served initially with the service number 5076 in The Sherwood Foresters and later transferred to the North Staffordshire regiment and landed in France on 3rd August 1917, promoted to Corporal on 27th October 1917 and to Sergeant on 31st December 1917.

He was killed in action on 21st March 1918, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, France.
