Family history

John Arthur Cooper was born in 1871 at Radford, Nottingham, he married Nellie Barratt (born 20th January 1870) they were married on 21st May 1898 at Christ Church, Nottingham, they lived at 10 Woodward Street, Nottingham and had 2 children Ronald Barratt Cooper born 1899 and Nellie born 3rd June 1905.

In the 1911 census the family are living at 16 Bathley Street, Nottingham John 40 yrs is a pelt sorter, he is living with his wife Nellie 41 yrs and their children, Ronald Barratt Cooper 12 yrs and Nelli Cooper 6 years of age.

Commencing 3rd July 1916 his widow was awarded a pension of 22 shillings a week.

Military history

Company Sergeant Major John Arthur Cooper enlisted at Nottingham 29th August 1914, he was 42 yrs and 240 days, he stated he previously served from 17th August 1902 to 31st March 1909 with the Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Regiment.

He served with the 10th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment landing in France on 14th July 1915 he was promoted to Company Sergeant Major on 28th April 1916 and was killed in action, 13th December 1915, aged 44, during the German shelling of the trenches at Sanctuary Wood, Belgium.

He is buried at Menin Road South Military Cemetery, Belgium. Plot 2. Row K Grave 18.

'COOPER. – In cherished memory of Co.-Sgt.-Maj. J. Cooper, killed in action December 13th, 1915. His loss a lasting sorrow. – His loving wife Nellie.'
