Family history

William Ruyal Brown was born in 1880 at Eastinor, he was the son of (Robert ) William and Elizabeth Brown of Cross Hill Gringley on the Hill Retford.

His father William was born in 1850 at Crosby, Lincolnshire, his mother Elizabeth was born in 1848 at Scothern, Lincolnshire, they were married C1874 they had 7 children sadly 1 died in infancy or early childhood in the 1911 census his parents are living at Gringley on the Hill.

He married Frances Mary Cooper (born 14th February 1867 ) in 1911 at Richmond, they lived at 7, Skeeby Road Richmond Yorkshire.

Commencing 26th February 1917 his widow was awarded a pension of 15 shillings and 6 pence a week.

Military history

Corporal William Ruyal Brown enlisted into the Richmond Regiment at Richmond and served with the 705th Company of the Army Service Corps and was a driver in the Transport Corps, and servant to Major Buck-Keene. He had previously served in the Army during the Boer War.

It is believed that he was killed instantly during an enemy air raid after a bomb was dropped and landed amongst him and his colleagues on 18th August 1916.

He is buried in Mikra British Cemetery Kalamaria, Greece (Grave Reference: 1613).
