Herbert Henley was born in 1891 at Great Bricknell, he was the son of the late George a farm labourer and horseman and the late Eliza Henley née Bates of High Street, Little Brickhill, Buckinghamshire.
His father George was born in 1849 at Little Brickhill, he died in 1919 aged 70 yrs of age, his mother Eliza Bates was born in 1854 at Great Brickhill, she died in 1919 aged 68 yrs, they were married in 1872 at Newport Pagnell, Buckingamshire, they went on to have 10 children, sadly 1 was to die in infancy or early childhood.
In the 1911 census the family are living at High Street, Little Brickhill, Buckinghamshire, George 63 yrs is a farm labourer, he is living with his wife Eliza 57 yrs and their son Arthur 17 yrs a baker.
In the same 1911 census Herbert has left the family home and is a lodger at Wollaton, Nottingham, he is shown as being 21 yrs single and a waggoner on a farm, he is boarding with James Burrows Newbury a domestic coachman and his family.
Herbert married Harriett Egginton (born 4th August 1896) on 23rd December 1916 at St Georges Church, Nottingham, they lived at 30 Goodhead Street, Meadows, Nottingham.
Commencing 3rd February 1919 his widow was awarded a pension of 13 shillings and 9 pence a week.
Private Herbert Henley enlisted at Flixton, Nottingham, he was a waggoner serving with the Army Service Corps, he died on 30th July 1918 by accidental drowning and is buried at Abbeville Communal Cemetery Extension, France.
Herbert's brother Albert was a professional soldier with 1st Battalion Lincolnshire Regiment. In 1911 he was serving in Aden and landed in France 13/8/1914. He became a prisoner of war.
