Family history

Norman Hallam was born Herbert Norman Hallam in 1888 at Hougham, Lincolnshire, he was the son of Frederick a farm albourer and Fanny Hallam née Worthington, of Marston, Grantham.

His father Frederick was born in Hougham, Lincolnshire in 1853 , his mother Fanny Worthington was born in 1864 at Plungar, Lincolnshire, they were married in 1881 their mariage was recorded in the Newark registration district, they went on to have 12 children, sadly 1 was to die in infancy or early childhood.

In the 1911 census the family were living at Marston, Grantham, Frederick 58 rs is a farm labourer, he is living with his wfe Fanny 48 yrs and their children, Leonard 16 yrs a farm labourer, Mildred 14 yrs, Albert 12 yrs and George 10 yrs of age.

Norman Hallam married on 1st August 1913 at Nottingham register office Mabel Worthington, born 29th January 1891, they lived at 2 Olive Square, Palm Street, New Basford.
they had a son Frereick Herbert born 10th March 1914.

In the 1911 census he is shown as being 23 yrs and is single and a private soldier serving with the 1st battalion Yorks and Lancaster Regiment , stationed in India.

Commencing 17th May 1915 his widow was awarded a pension of 15 shillings a week.

Military history

Private Norman Hallam, enlisted at Doncaster on 3rd February 1904 , he was 18 yrs and 9 months of age and served with the 2nd Battalion York and Lancaster Regiment, landing in France on 9th September 1914 he died of wounds on 24th October 1914 and is buried in Bailleul Communal Cemetery.

In memoriam published 24th October 1916 in the Nottingham Evening Post :-

“HALLAM. – In loving memory of Private Norman Hallam, York and Lancasters, who died of wounds in Boulogne Hospital, October 24th, 1914, beloved husband of Mabel Hallam. A noble life laid down for King and country. – From his sorrowing wife and child.”

Two of Norman's brothers were also killed in the 'Great War'

Private Leonard Octavious Hallam served with the service number 17266 in the King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry he died on 23rd March 1916, he is buried at Outtersteene Communal Cemetery Extension, Bailleul, France

Captain Ernest Walter Hallam served with the 18th battalion Canadian Infantry, he was killed in action on 29th September 1915, he is buried at Bailleul Communal Cemetery Extension France.
