Family History

Henry Espiner Stainsby was born on 30th March 1886 at Leeds, he was the son of the late Joseph Waterton Stainsby a confectioner and Esther Stainsby née Espiner of 19 Derwent Street, Nottingham. His father Joseph Waterton was born in 1856 at Harrogate, he died in 1898 at Nottingham, aged 42 yrs, his mother Esther Espiner was born in 1858 at Beadale, Yorkshire, they were married in 1878 at Stockton, Durham, they went on to have 10 children, sadly 3 were to die in infancy or early childhood. In the 1911 census the family are living at 19 Derwent Street, Nottingham, Esther 53 yrs a widow is living with her children, Henry Espiner 24 years a box cutter, William 22 yrs a printer, Ellen 18 yrs a lace curtain finisher, Lizzie 16 yrs a lace hand and Ada 14 yrs a lace mender.

Military History

Private Henry Espiner Stainsby enlisted at Sutton, Yorkshire, he served with the 1/5th battalion Northumberland Fusiliers, he was killed in action on 11th September 1916, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.
