Robert attended Scargill Boys school West Hallam. On leaving school, he worked for Richard Morris as a cowhand at Grange Farm, Cock Orchard, West Hallam.

Family history

Robert Elliott was born on 28th January 1892 at West Hallam, he was baptised on 17th April 1892 at the parish church at West Hallam, he was the son of the late Robert (a farmer) and Emily Elliott née Sims and the brother of Arthur, Annie, John Henry and Walter Elliott.

His father Robert was born in 1860 at Cartingon, Derbyshire he died in 19105 at West Hallam he was 45 yrs of age, his mother Emily Sims was born in 1864 at Hogmaston, Derbyshire, they were married on 18th December 1884 at Hogmaston,they had 9 children.

They lived at Nursery Farm West Hallam, Derbyshire. Robert’s father died in spring 1905 and his mother moved to Kimberley. She married Enoch Talbot in the autumn of 1909.

In the 1911 census Robert is living at the Grange, West Hallam, he is living with Richard Morris 45 yrs a farmer, he is shown as 20 yrs of age and is a cowman.

Military history

Driver Robert Ellis enlisted on 8th September 1914 at Derby, giving his address as West Hallam, his age as 22 yrs and his occupation as a farmer labourer he was posted to the Royal Field Artillery, he was discharged on 8th January 1915 as medically unfit. He later rejoined and served with the Royal Field Artillery, serving with 4th North Midland Bde and may have been a Territorial.

Robert is named on the West Hallam village war memorial located near St. Wilfrid's church gates.

Extra information

No Medal Card exists for this man so he saw no overseas service. He died in Kimberley 28/2/1915 of TB (death certificate obtained from GRO) and is registered as 'farm labourer' which identifies him as the 'cowman' working on a West Hallam farm in 1911 and the son of a farmer.

Robert Elliott has a CWGC headstone in Kimberley Cemetery Grave Reference: C5410.
