Henry Hurst Anderson was born on 5th August 1887 at Gringley on the Hill the fifth child born to John and Lizzie Anderson née Hurst.
John Anderson was born in 1853 at Stokeham, Lizzie Hurst was born in 1854 at Rampton, married in 1876 and lived mainly in Gringley on the Hill, Nottinghamshire.
Henry was born on 5 Aug 1887 at Gringley and spent all his childhood there, as did his ten siblings. Willie 1878, John 1880, Millicent 1883, , Beatrice 1884, George 1885, Muriel 1890, Clarence 1891, Walter 1893, Thomas 1896 and Frederick 1899.
Henry broke away from his family when he married Sarah Ann Schofield (born 17th October 1888) on 7th February 1909 at Darfield, Yorkshire, Sarah brought a child to the marriage Hilda May Schofield born 8th April 1908
They set up home at Low Barugh, near Barnsley. They very quickly had three children by 1911, Ernest Leslie born 22nd May 1909, Fred William born 21st October 1913 and Ronald Henry born 12th July 1914
Meanwhile in 1911 , John & Lizzie Anderson had moved to Worksop, resident at 246 Gateford Road with five of their 11 children.
Commencing 31st January 1916 his widow was awarded a pension of 22 shillings and 6 pence a week.
Henry's widow re-married to Albert Hagain at Barnsley in 1916 they lived at 3 Robinson Street, Chapel Bridwell, Barnsley.
Private Henry Hurst Anderson enlisted at Barnsley on 3rd September 1914, he was 27 years of age,he gave his address as 12 Snowdrop Terrace, Barnsley he was posted to the York and Lancaster Regiment. He served with the 1/5t battalion York and Lancaster Regiment. Landing in France on 13th April 1915 he was killed in action on 10th July 1915, having no known grave his name is commemoratedont the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.
