Thomas Burton was born in 1890 the son of Edgar a coal miner and Jane Burton née Lamb of New Westwood, Jacksdale, Nottinghamshire.
Edgar was born in 1856 at Ambergate, Derbyshire, Jane Lamb in 1859 at Whaley, Derbyshire. Married in 1881 near Belper, they had six children, five surviving infancy - Amelia b.1883, Charles b.1884, Henry b.1885, Thomas b.1890 and Esther b.1901.
In 1911, the family was living at Westwood. Edgar 55 yrs a coal minor is living with his wife Jane 52 yrs and their children, Charles 27 yrs a coal miner, Henry 26 yrs a coal miner, Amelia 28 yrs Thomas 21 yrs made sanitary pipes and Esther 10 yrs of age.
Thomas Burton enlisted at Nottingham whilst livinging at Jacksdale, he served with the 17th batalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, He was killed in action, 3rd September 1916, at age 28, during the attack near Beaumont Hamel, France, during the Battle of the Somme.
He is commemorated on the Thiepval memorial, Somme, France.
His brother Lance Corporal 15230 Charles Burton, also died as a result of the Great War. He died on 29th March 1921 and is buried at St Mary's Churchyard, Westwood.
