James Tooth was born in 1898 at Mansfield, he was the son of John Francis Tooth a coal miner hewer and Elizabeth Ann Tooth née Allen of 7 Arthur Street, Mansfield.

His father John Francis Tooth was born in 1875 at Penkridge, Staffordshire, his mother Elizabeth Ann Allen was born in 1873 at Mansfield, they were married in 1894 their marriage was recorded in the Mansfield registration district, they went on to have 8 children sadly two were to die in infancy or early childhood.

In the 1911 census the family lived at 20 Terrace Road, Mansfield, John 36 yrs is a coal miner hewer, he is living with his wife Elizabeth 38 yrs and their children, James 14 yrs, Elizabeth 8 yrs John 6 yrs and Emma 4 yrs of age.

Military history

Private James Tooth enlisted at Mansfield he served with the 9th battalion Royal Welsh Fusiliers, he was killed in action on 20th October 1918 and is buried at St Aubert British Cemetery, France
