George Salmon was born in 1893 at Mansfield, he was the son of Frank an iron fitter and his second wife Annie Salmon née Corbitt of 28 Greenwood's Yard, Mansfield.
His father Frank was born in 1838 at Sutton in Ashfield, he died in 1918 at Mansfield he was 80 yrs of age, he married his first wife Mary Ann Chapman (born 1835- died 1887) they were married in 1857 and had had 4 children.
His mother Annie Corbitt was born in 1861 at Mansfield, she married Frank in 1888 at Mansfield, they went on to have 11 children.
In the 1911 census the family are living at 41 Frederick Street, Mansfield, Frank 75 yrs is retired he is living with is second wife Annie 50 yrs and their children, George 19 yrs a soldier, Hilda 16 yrs a mill hand, Lewis 14 yrs a coal miner hewer, Winnie11 yrs, Sidney 9 yrs, Lily 7 yrs and Elsie 4 yrs of age.Parents: Frank and Annie Salmon of 28 Greenwood's Yard
Private George Salmon enlisted on 30th June 1910 he was aged 18 years and 1 month. He was a coal miner before enlisting. He served with the 1st battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he had seen previous serice in India. He went to France on 4th November 1914 and was killed in action, on 11th March 1915, aged 22, during the Battle of Neuve Chapelle, France.
Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Le Touret Memorial, France. Panel 26 and 27.
George's medals were sent to his mother but with proviso that they should be passed to her husband if he recovered, as he was currently of unsound mind. Frank was 25 years older than Annie and was in his late 70's when the war started.
His brother Private Lewis Salmon enlisted at Sutton in Ashfield whilst residing at Mansfield, he initially served with the service number 12390 in the Sherwood Foresters Regiment, later transferring to the 24th Company Machine Gun Corps, he was killed in action on 7th July 1916, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thievpal Memorial,
