John Alfred Maltby was born in 1899 at Mansfield he was the son of Alfred a coal miner hewer and Mary Ann Maltby née Bassett Godfrey of 33 Newton Street, Mansfield.

His father Alred was born in 1860 at Southwell, his mother Mary Anne Bassett Godfrey was born in 1860 at Westhorpe, Southwell, they were married on 1st June 1880 at St NMarys Church, Southwell, they went on to have 10 children, sadly two were to die in infancy or early childhood.

In the 1911 census the family are living at 17 Newton Street, Mansfield, Alfred 51 yrs is a coal miner hewer, he is living with his wife Mary Ann 51 yrs and 5 of their children, including John Alfred Maltby 12 yrs of age.

Military history

Private John Alfred Maltby attested 20th December 1916 giving his address as 33 Newton Street, Mansfield, aged 17 years and 320 days he was a collier his next of kin was his father John Alfred Maltby of the same address. and mobilised 20th June 1917. He landed in France on 13th February 1918. Initially reported missing on 21/23rd March 1918 his death was only confirmed killed later. Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Arras Memorial.
