John Arthur Holmes was born in 1900 at Sutton in Ashfield, he was the son of John Joseph a licensed victualler and the late Fanny Marie Holmes née Cook of Wagon and Coals Inn, Ratcliffe Gate, Mansfield.
His father John Joseph was born in 1870 at Mansfield, his mother Fanny Maria Cook was born in 1880 at Naunton Beauchamp, Worcestershire, she died in 1917, she was 37 yrs old, they were married in 1903 at Mansfield,
In the 1911 census the family are living at 20 Bridge Street, Mansfield, John Joseph 37 yrs is a licensed victualler he is living with his wife Fanny Maria 31 yrs who is assisting in her husbands, business, they are living with ther children, John Arthur 12 yrs a scholar, Constance Fanny 5 yrs, Clarice 4 yrs, Evelyn 3 yrs also living with the family are 2 servants.
John Joseph states on the census that he has been married for 8 years and has had 5 children, 1 of whom has died in infancy or early childhood.
His pension record card shows his dependent to be his granmother Marie Barber of 45 Old Victoria Street, Mansfield, Nottinghamshire.
Private John Arthur Holmes enlisted at Mansfield, he initially served wit the service number 39909 in the Leicestershire Regiment, he was serving with the 15th battalion Lancashire Fusiliers when he was killed in action on 2nd November 1918, he is buried at Landrecies British Cemetery, France,
