Family history

Joseph Bernard (Benjamin) Edmondson was born in 1891,at Bradford, he was the son of the late Charles Edmondson a joiner

Joseph married hs first wife Sarah Ann Rowbotham in 1910 at Bradford, they had a daughter Rose Rowbotham born 28th April 1909, his wife Sarah died in 1915 at Bradford,she was 32 yrs of age.

In the 1911 census the family are living at 156 Beamsley St Manningham, Bradford, Benjamin 28 yrs is a dyers finisher, he is living with his wife Sarah Ann 28 yrs and his 2 children, Rosie 2 yrs and Hilda 5 months old.

He married his second wife Freda Meadows (born 26th November 1898) on 21st February 1916 at St Peters Church, Mansfield,

Joseph brought two children to the marriage from his first marriage, they were Hilda Edmondson born 4th November 1910 and Kathleen Edmondson born 26th July 1912 the family lived at 96 Newgate Lane, Mansfield, Nottinghamshire.

Commencing 15th January 1917 his widow was awarded a pension of 20 shillings and 6 pence a week.

Military history

Private Joseph Bernard Edmondson enlisted at Bradford whilst residing at Mansfield, he served with the 1/6 battalion West Yorkshire Regiment, he was killed in action on 1st July 1916 the first day of the battle of the Somme having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval memorial.
