Henry Dixon was born in 1896 at Clay Cross, he was the son of William Henry Dixon a coal miner hewer and Matilda Dixon née Thorpe of Lime Street, Mansfield.
his father William Henry was born in 1864 at Codnor, his mother Matilda Thorpe was born in 1871 at Clay Cross, they were married in 1882 their marriage was recorded in the Lincoln registration district, they went on to have 12 childrn sadly 7 were to die in infancy or early childhood, his siblings were Mary Emma, Fanny, James and William Dixon.
In 1911 the family lived at 14 Lime Street Mansfield, (William) Henry 47 yrs is a coal miner hewer, he is living with his wife Matilda 40 yrs and their children, Mary Emma 22 yrs, Henry 15 yrs a coal miner pony driver, James 13 yrs, William 9 yrs and Jane Elizabeth 3yrs of age.
Henry Dixon enlisted on 5 August 1914 and after training was posted to 1st Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby Regiment), arriving in France on 9 February 1915. The battalion were in Brigade reserve billets near La Flique and the war diary mentions that on 5th March 1915, nine men were wounded when the Germans shelled the billets of HQ company. It is likely that Henry was wounded in this attack and removed to Boulogne and one of the hospitals based there. He died of his wounds on 7th and was buried in the Boulogne Eastern Cemetery.
